A family garden with green oak retaining wall

A large garden with a difficult slope

This rear garden consisted of a large lawn with an awkward slope leaving most of it unsuitable for play or entertaining.

We added a low retaining wall to create distinct areas for dining, lounging and play.

Green oak sleepers will grey and soften over time, contrasting with warm tones of the natural sandstone paving.

Devil in the details

Green oak is a natural material that is durable for outdoor use, and like all natural materials it will change over time.

To highlight this quality we incorporated joinery details more commonly found in ship building into the construction.

Long term plan

We designed a Master Plan for our client, which  included areas they could add to their garden at a later date including a playground, and hot tub and sauna

A simple garden
for a newly built home

A blank slate

A modern home newly built left the clients with little funds for the exterior. We focused on a functional and attractive front entrance, and mixed perenial border and lawns to the rear.

High Contrast

We incorporated riven slate and granite to contrast against the with the homes crisp white walls.

Keeping it simple

The rear of the garden is composed of a lawn with large perennial border which the clients can add to and develop over time.

A courtyard  of reclaimed materials

A multi-use space

A utilitarian space, covered in a combination of poured concrete and blue brick pavers, this former farmyard to do double duty. As part of a new front entrance this garden had to be as a functional space with clear wayfinding while doubling as a sheltered and intimate courtyard for the clients.

Reinterpreting the past

Paths made of reclaimed brick pavers divide space into zones: Entry, dining, and garden. Small multistem trees were added enhancing the intimacy of the space.

A new micro climate

A new brick wall and archway was installed. This improved the climate in the courtyard allowing for a mediterranean influenced planting scheme.
